Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese (Printable)

Savory blend of tomato, basil, and melted mozzarella in toasted sourdough bread.

# Ingredient List:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough or country-style bread
02 - 4 oz mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded
03 - 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

→ Vegetables & Herbs

04 - 1 large ripe tomato, thinly sliced
05 - 8–10 fresh basil leaves

→ Seasonings

06 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

# Directions:

01 - Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each bread slice.
02 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a cutting board. Layer each with half the mozzarella, tomato slices, basil leaves, and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
03 - Top each with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
04 - Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
05 - Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
06 - Remove sandwiches from skillet, allow to cool for one minute, then slice and serve warm.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The basil and tomato combination tastes like a caprese salad got cozy inside melted cheese, so it feels fancy but genuinely easy.
  • It's ready in twenty minutes and uses ingredients most people already have lying around, making it perfect for those unexpected hunger moments.
  • One bite proves that comfort food doesn't need to be complicated, just intentional about what goes between the bread.
02 -
  • Wet tomato slices will make your bread soggy, so pat them dry with a paper towel first, especially if you're using a particularly juicy specimen.
  • Medium heat is your best friend here, not high heat, because rushing this means a burnt outside and cold cheese inside, which is the sandwich equivalent of heartbreak.
03 -
  • Let your butter soften at room temperature for five minutes before spreading, because cold butter tears the bread and warm butter doesn't toast right.
  • Slice your tomato just before assembling so it stays fresh and doesn't weep into the other ingredients, watering down all your careful work.
